MC Donald’s in Lugano, Switzerland Accepts BTC As Form of Payment
  • McDonald now accepts Bitcoin as a form of payment at Lugano in Switzerland.
  • Bitcoin Magazine shared a one-minute video demonstrating the process.
  • Previously, El Salvador passed a law to accept BTC as legal tender in the country.

In the 63,000-person city of Lugano in Switzerland, the multinational fast food giant McDonald’s began to accept Bitcoin (BTC) as a form of payment. This development came via Bitcoin Magazine today when it posted a one-minute video on Twitter showing how to purchase food from a McDonald’s digital kiosk and pay for it using a mobile app at the counter.

On the credit cash machine, the Tether (USDT) logo was visible next to the Bitcoin sign. The crypto community does not think this as surprising given that the city of Lugano said in March 2022 that it would recognize Bitcoin, Tether, and the LVGA token as legal money.

The initiative would expand payment options for parking fines, public services, and student tuition prices, enabling Lugano residents to pay their taxes using cryptocurrency. Additionally, more than 200 local stores and enterprises are anticipated to accept crypto payments for products and services.

Meanwhile, in June 2021, El Salvador passed a law to accept bitcoin as legal tender in the country, making it the first country to do so. But in September of that year, thousands of people protested against the law, fearing the introduction of the cryptocurrency could lead to instability in the Central American nation.

Nonetheless, the country would later launch a crypto bank, Chivo, to allow citizens to buy and exchange cryptocurrency. On July 1, the country’s president bought 80 bitcoin for $19,000, which amounts to $1.52 million.
