Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin has published a second update about Balvi, a charity organization he co-founded to combat the Coronavirus pandemic.

In a series of tweets on September 8, Buterin firstly expressed gratitude to the meme-based cryptocurrency Shiba Inu (SHIB) and its team for supporting the project before highlighting other details.

Long Covid Research Initiative (LCRI), D-Nome, Kernels, PolyBio, OpenAeros, and a CO2 tracking app are a part of the open-source projects aimed at reducing coronavirus transmission that benefited from the most recent financing round.

LCRI, a collaboration of researchers, clinicians, and patients working to study and treat Long Covid, confirmed receipt of over $15 million funding commitment from the Balvi project. Also, Epiwatch, real-time analysis of open-source data to provide better early warnings of outbreaks, confirmed the receipt of $5.3 million back in May 2022.

Buterin additionally shared his terrifying experience with COVID-19, and he believes his own story was “far from worse” compared to other sufferers. He further stated:

The biggest reason to worry about covid is not short-term death rates, but rather long covid. […] And we can be much better at funding medical research and infrastructure to bring COVID down to the point where it can be fully ignored, and deal with future pandemics with minimal disruption.

In 2018, when the Shiba Inu team gifted Buterin 50% of the entire Shiba Inu tokens, the CEO pledged to burn 90% of the token’s supply to prevent the coin’s value from plummeting and donate the remaining assets to charities.
