In a recent development in the Binance-Nigeria legal battle, US political leaders have urged President Biden to take the initiative for Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan’s release from Nigerian custody. Reportedly, the executive is currently suffering from malaria without proper medical attention.
According to a post on X shared by Fox Business reporter Eleanor Terrett, leaders, including House Committee on Foreign Affairs Chairman Michael McCaul, wrote a letter to Biden and the hostage affairs unit urging the release of Gambaryan.
In late February 2024, the Nigerian authorities arrested Binance executives Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla, alleging Binance’s involvement in a $26 billion illicit flow. The executives were detained, and their passports were seized.
Subsequently, a series of events unfolded, including the executives’ lawsuits against the Nigerian authorities, Binance CEO Richard Teng’s bribery claims against the authority, and delays in Gambaryan’s trial.
Last week, when Gambaryan was produced for his trial, he collapsed in court due to severe health conditions. Later, it was suspected that the executive was suffering from malaria. Gambaryan’s wife, Yuki Gambaryan, complained of the Nigerian authorities’ negligence to provide adequate treatment for her husband despite the court order.
In the recent letter addressed to President Biden, Secretary Antony Blinken, and the Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Roger D. Carstens, the political leaders asserted that the Binance executive is “wrongfully detained” by the authority. They added,
“We fear for his life. Immediate action is essential to ensure his safety and preservice his life. We must act swiftly before it is too late.”
Furthermore, the leaders accused the Nigerian authority of charging Gambaryan with multiple “baseless” crimes, including tax evasion and money laundering. The leaders addressed the matter as the authorities’ coercion tactic to threaten Binance.
