- Harborne’s £3M boost solidifies Reform UK’s funding lead ahead of May elections.
- Reform UK outpaced major parties, raising £5.5M in Q4 2025, highlighting donation disparities.
- Calls grow for tighter rules on cryptocurrency donations amid wealthy donors’ influence.
Reform UK has received another £3 million donation from Christopher Harborne, the Thailand-based cryptocurrency and aviation investor. This follows his record £9 million contribution last summer. The latest funding strengthens Nigel Farage’s party as it heads into the May local elections in England and Wales, where council seats are being contested.
Harborne’s donations have become a key part of Reform UK’s election strategy. The party topped political donation charts in the last quarter of 2025, raising about £5.5 million, outpacing all major parties.
Notably, the total included a £200,000 contribution from JC Bamford Excavators, a firm traditionally aligned with the Conservatives. In addition, Reform UK received six-figure donations from entrepreneurs and international business figures, including biotech investor David Grainger, Monaco-based metals broker Ashley Levett, and Lebanese-Irish tech billionaire Bassim Haidar.
Donations Highlight Party Funding Disparities
The scale of Harborne’s contributions has renewed discussions about political donation limits. By comparison, the Conservative Party reported around £4.2 million in the same quarter, while Labour and the Liberal Democrats raised just over £2 million each.
The Green Party, despite winning the Gorton and Denton byelection, reported only £294,069 in donations. Your Party, led by Jeremy Corbyn, collected £670,068. These figures underscore significant disparities in financial resources across UK parties.
Moreover, critics are calling for tighter rules around cryptocurrency donations, citing concerns about transparency. Harborne’s ongoing support, along with high-profile donors such as Frank Hester’s £20 million contribution to the Conservatives in 2024, highlights the influence of wealthy individuals on political campaigns.
UK Political Donations Reach Nearly £65 Million
The UK’s Electoral Commission reported that political parties collectively accepted almost £65 million in 2025. Donations in the fourth quarter totaled £15.4 million, showing a significant increase compared with the same period in 2024.
Public funds accounted for approximately £3 million of this sum, while most contributions came from private donors. No new loans were recorded, although parties fully repaid £58,656 in outstanding debt.
The Commission emphasized that transparency remains high but noted areas requiring legal strengthening. Proposed reforms to the Representation of the People Bill aim to tighten controls and ensure voters can trust the political finance system. Meanwhile, parties continue to secure funds from both domestic and international sources, shaping the competitive landscape ahead of the upcoming elections.
