Tether has frozen nearly $550 million in USDT this year after U.S. authorities identified links to Iranian sanctions networks. The actions highlight how blockchain transparency can help governments track money tied to sanctions evasion. Tether says its cooperation covers thousands of investigations worldwide.

Iran-linked funds face scrutiny

In April, Tether froze $344 million across two wallets linked to Iran’s Central Bank. OFAC later added those addresses to its sanctions list. In July, Tether froze another $130 million across four TRON wallets after Treasury expanded its designation.

Consequently, the combined freezes reached $550 million during 2026. Additionally, Tether worked with Israel’s counterterrorism financing authorities on Iran-linked networks. That cooperation helped freeze $22 million across over 40 cases involving hundreds of addresses.

Broader enforcement cooperation

Moreover, Tether says it works with 340 law enforcement agencies across 67 countries. Its cooperation supports 2,900 investigations, including over 1,600 involving U.S. agencies.

Significantly, those efforts have contributed to $4.9 billion in frozen assets. Recent cases include a $52 million scam-center operation and a $61 million fraud investigation.
