- US prosecutors submitted a letter to the court claiming to drop one of Sam Bankman-Fried’s charges.
- This angered the community across Twitter and sparked a heated discussion.
- Reportedly, this is the second charge being dropped.
On Wednesday, US prosecutors submitted a letter to the District Judge Honorable Lewis A. Kaplan of the Southern District of New York claiming to drop Sam Bankman-Fried’s charges of making “unlawful campaign contributions.”
Explaining the reason behind this decision, the US attorney Damian Williams and his team representing the United States stated, “The Bahamas did not intend to extradite the defendant on the campaign contributions count.”
This angered the community across Twitter and sparked a heated discussion among individuals and experts who believed this to be a part of a controversy. In 2022, OpenSecrets reported that Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of the fallen FTX crypto exchange, was the second-largest contributor to the Democratic Party giving more than $990,000 to the candidate and an additional $38.8 million to other groups.
On top of the unlawful campaign charges, there are still 12 other charges that Bankman-Fried faces and it has been reported that this is the second charge being dropped. The decisions on the 12 other charges are yet to be confirmed and awaits trial.
Many believe that this decision was “injustice at its finest,” and continued to blame the justice department’s inefficiency. However, by observing the letter produced by the US prosecutors, the US seems to be making this decision in order to maintain the treaty with the Bahamas.
One Twitter user decided to express his opinion based on this decision through a video, claiming:
And if you believe that bullshit, I have some Jewish paraphernalia made by the Azov Battalion to sell you
Another user also exclaimed, “Sam Bankman-Fried is getting away with it.” Reports show that the Judge seems to be frustrated over the defendant after the prosecutors pointed out that Bankman-Fried tried to use the media to harass a key witness against him. Finally, Judge Kaplan warned the defendant, “And I say to the defendant, Mr. Bankman-Fried: You better take it seriously, too.”
