Midas Debuts mTBILL on Algorand, Offers 4.06% T-Bill Yield to European Retail

Midas mTBILL on Algorand offers European retail tokenized US Treasury bill yields, boosting DeFi accessibility.
  • Midas launched mTBILL on Algorand, offering tokenized US Treasury bill yields to Europe.
  • The mTBILL token allows retail investors access with no minimums, unlike institutional funds.
  • This comes as Europe leads in tokenization, though ALGO’s price has recently dipped.

The decentralized finance (DeFi) space on Algorand is set for a notable development with the launch of mTBILL by tokenization protocol Midas. This new offering is a yield-bearing, tokenized version of U.S. Treasury bills, now live on the Algorand blockchain.

Designed specifically for retail investors in Europe, mTBILL aims to provide stable returns with no minimum investment requirement.

This marks a sharp contrast to traditional institutional options, making government bond exposure more accessible. With a current net yield of 4.06% and zero barriers to entry, mTBILL could change how individual investors engage with secure, interest-generating assets on-chain.

Breaking Institutional Barriers with Blockchain Technology

The mTBILL represents a tokenized certificate tied to short-term U.S. Treasury exchange-traded funds. It aims to democratize access to a traditionally exclusive financial instrument. Unlike products such as BlackRock’s BUIDL fund, which demands a $5 million minimum investment, mTBILL welcomes all investors, regardless of capital size.

On May 27, a $2 million atomic swap was completed using USDC for mTBILL on Algorand. This was the first such transaction and demonstrated the blockchain’s capability for seamless, trustless asset exchange.

The Algorand Foundation plans to integrate mTBILL into its DeFi ecosystem in the coming weeks. The initiative is expected to boost on-chain activity and attract new retail users looking for low-risk digital investment options.

Europe Takes the Lead in Tokenization

Europe is emerging as a hub for tokenized finance. Germany, in particular, accounts for nearly 60% of the region’s tokenized bond issuance. The country’s supportive regulatory landscape has played a crucial role in driving this growth.

The tokenized asset market has already crossed the $50 billion mark, according to Brickken. Analysts forecast the market could reach a $2 trillion valuation by 2030.

Several major players are entering the tokenization arena. Companies like Ripple, Coinbase Asset Management, and Glasstower are expected to launch offerings by 2025. Established institutions such as UBS and Fidelity are also investing heavily in tokenized funds and stablecoins.

Despite the innovation, Algorand’s native token, ALGO, has seen price pressure. As of May 30, it is trading at $0.2017, reflecting a 7.2% drop in 24 hours.
