No Native Crypto Trading on X, Despite Smart Cashtags Buzz
  • Nikita Bier confirms X’s Smart Cashtags show live crypto prices and charts.
  • Users can tap Buy/Sell, but trades happen via external brokers, not on X.
  • The feature deepens finance integration while avoiding X acting as a crypto exchange.

Rumors that X is about to launch built-in crypto trading have been scaled back after a clarification from the company’s product lead. The speculation started when posts claimed X would soon let its more than one billion users trade Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies directly in the app using a feature called “Smart Cashtags.”

The buzz followed comments from X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, who said Smart Cashtags will launch in the coming weeks. The feature will let users tap on ticker symbols to see live prices, charts, and other financial data for stocks and crypto.

However, Bier clarified that X will not handle trade execution or act as a broker. Instead, the platform is only providing financial data tools and links to external services.

Data Tools, Not Direct Trading

According to the clarification, Smart Cashtags will function primarily as an information layer within the X timeline. Users will be able to:

  • View live price feeds
  • Access charts and asset data
  • Tap Buy/Sell options that redirect to third-party brokers or exchange partners

Any actual trade execution will take place off-platform through external services. The initial misunderstanding stemmed from posts claiming that users would be able to “execute trades on the X app directly.”

Bier refuted that interpretation, stressing that while trading can be initiated from within the timeline, execution will not be processed by X itself.

Concerns Over Spam and Abuse

Bier also addressed broader concerns about how crypto integrations could affect the user experience. He noted that while he supports wider crypto adoption on X, certain applications that incentivize spam, coordinated raids, or harassment undermine the platform.

He warned that poorly designed crypto features could “meaningfully degrade the experience for millions of people, only to enrich a few.”

Step Toward the “Everything App”

Despite the clarification, the rollout of Smart Cashtags still represents a significant step in X’s evolution toward becoming a financial and information hub.

By embedding real-time market data directly into conversations, X is deepening its integration of finance and social media, without taking on the regulatory and operational burdens of becoming a brokerage.

Crypto trading on X will remain partner-driven, with the platform acting as a gateway rather than an execution venue.
