A distressing video has surfaced showing Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan, detained in Nigeria since February, struggling to enter an Abuja courtroom for his money laundering trial. The footage shows Gambaryan denied a wheelchair and assistance from a prison guard, despite his visibly deteriorating health.
Gambaryan was arrested in Abuja alongside another Binance executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla, in connection with alleged illicit financial activities. His health has reportedly declined significantly during his six months in custody, with complications from a herniated disc and bouts of pneumonia, malaria, and tonsillitis.
His trial, initially scheduled for October 11th, was recently moved up to September 2nd. While he had previously appeared in court in a wheelchair, on September 2nd, he was seen in a much more distressed state, relying on crutches.
He limped into the courtroom, dragging his left leg behind and pleading for the guard’s help. As he tried to clutch the guard’s wrist for support, the latter stepped back, leaving Gambaryan helpless. As the prison guard was reportedly instructed not to help the Binance executive, he was left with a single crutch, hardly able to walk.
Gambaryan’s family describes him as being in visible pain and even crying out for help. In the video, he can be heard asserting his innocence and pleading for justice. After several painful attempts to walk, he again asked for the guard’s assistance, stating he was not okay.
Following the trial, Gambaryan’s lawyers filed a new bail application on medical grounds, urging the court to release him so he can receive proper medical care. However, prosecutors from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission opposed the application, claiming Gambaryan is in good health.
This incident has further intensified concerns about Gambaryan’s well-being and the conditions of his detention. It also highlights the ongoing legal battle between Binance and Nigerian authorities, with Gambaryan seemingly caught in the middle.
