PayPal has confirmed it’s bringing mobile contactless payments to physical retail stores across Germany this summer, marking its first major push into the country’s in-store payment scene. German shoppers will soon be able to use the PayPal app on their smartphones to pay at any merchant that accepts Mastercard contactless payments.

The move is part of PayPal’s broader effort to blend its digital payment tools with Germany’s physical retail landscape. The company says the updated mobile wallet feature will roll out nationwide in the coming weeks on both iOS and Android devices. This launch also represents the global debut of PayPal’s specific contactless mobile wallet functionality.

How Tap-to-Pay and History Tracking Work

Once users get the latest PayPal app update, they can simply tap their phone at compatible point-of-sale (POS) terminals to make a payment. All these transactions will run through Mastercard’s established contactless system. The updated app will also introduce a combined overview, letting users track both their online and new in-store PayPal purchases together in one history feed.

Alongside tap-to-pay, PayPal is extending its popular “Ratenzahlung To Go” installment payment option to German physical stores. Previously only available online, this feature lets consumers split in-store purchase costs into 3, 6, 12, or 24 monthly payments.

Shoppers can apply for the installment plan directly within the PayPal app, either before heading to the store or during the checkout process. This marks the first time PayPal has offered its buy now, pay later service for brick-and-mortar shopping anywhere in Europe.

PayPal also confirmed customers using the new contactless feature can earn cashback rewards at select German retailers. Joerg Kablitz, PayPal’s Managing Director for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, noted the company is focused on developing products specifically suited for the German market.
