Romania’s postal service, Posta Romana, has begun putting up cryptocurrency terminals in some of its branches. The project has been launched in collaboration with Bitcoin Romania (BTR Exchange), the largest cryptocurrency trading platform in Romania. With these terminals, users can easily fund their accounts on the Bitcoin Romania platforms. Post Office 1 in Tulcea has the first active machine.
According to a report released on Wednesday, it is expected that four additional terminals will open in the near future. The facilities will be built in Alexandria, Piatra Neamt, Botosani, and Nadlac.
Posta Romana Paves the Way for Romania’s Crypto Future
Romania’s interest in digital assets is evident in the postal service’s move. Horia Gustă from AAF reports that over 600,000 Romanians have already invested in cryptocurrencies. Since 2022, Posta Romana has been focusing on blockchain technology. In that year, the institution became the first public body in Romania to release an official NFT. The NFT was launched to mark the agency’s 160th year and collected donations for Hospice Casa Sperantei.
In 2023, the postal service came out with another set of NFTs commemorating Romania’s anti-communist heroes. Such initiatives are designed to support the country’s broader modernization plans.
The Posta Romana is undergoing a significant transformation on a large scale. The project involves more than RON 80 million (about $18.12 million) in investments. The money is helping to improve logistics hubs and their services.
Romania’s Crypto Boom: 5.65 Million Users Expected by 2025
Crypto use in Romania is growing at a quick pace. According to a Statista report from July 2024, the number of people using crypto in the country is expected to reach 5.65 million by 2025.
Romania ranks seventh on the list of Eastern European countries in terms of crypto inflows. According to Chainalysis, between July 2023 and June 2024, the country received less than $25 billion in digital assets.
Adding crypto terminals marks a new phase in providing financial services. This follows the current interest in digital services and the growing popularity of decentralized finance in Romania. Offering crypto services at postal branches makes it easy for new users to access them.
The involvement of a postal company in crypto leads many to expect a larger change. It combines older forms of infrastructure with modern financial services. Romania is rapidly taking a major role in the Eastern European cryptocurrency scene.
