- Crypto scammer “Soup” has been exposed for organized scam attacks on crypto projects.
- Soup is believed to be responsible for orchestrating a series of attacks on various projects.
- On-chain sleuth ZachXBT’s investigation also exposed Soup’s involvement in previous thefts.
In a recent investigation, popular on-chain sleuth ZachXBT has exposed the actions of a notorious crypto scammer known as “Soup,” aka Dan. Soup, whose real identity remains unknown, is believed to be responsible for orchestrating a series of sophisticated attacks on various cryptocurrency projects, resulting in the theft of substantial amounts of funds and valuable assets.
The investigation, detailed in a Twitter thread by ZachXBT, provides a comprehensive account of Soup’s illicit activities. ZachXBT explained that Soup enacted his scam by impersonating Luke Hamilton – an employee for the crypto media outlet Decrypt.
Additionally, Soup collaborated with other scammers to approach team members of crypto projects to deceive them into joining a fake Decrypt Discord server in an attempt to steal their Discord token.
A Discord token is an alphanumeric string acting as representing a user’s login credentials, giving them access to any servers they own or are a part of.
The first incident detailed in the thread occurred on May 30, 2023, when the Pika Discord server was compromised after a team member’s Discord account was phished. Exploiting this breach, the scammers posted a malicious link that allowed them to steal over $220,000 worth of funds.
On the following day, the Orbiter Finance Discord server was compromised. Similar to before, the scammers posted an infected link in the Discord server, which helped them hoard over $760,000 in funds.
Further investigations revealed that Soup received 7.5 ETH directly from the stolen funds, alongside additional funds directed to an alternative address. This accounts for approximately 30% of the total stolen assets.
However, Soup’s misdeeds did not end there. ZachXBT also uncovered evidence suggesting Soup had splurged some of the ill-gotten gains on exclusive Roblox items known to sell for significant amounts.
ZachXBT’s investigation also exposed Soup’s involvement in previous thefts. Last year, Soup and a partner known as Faint were implicated in the theft of Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC NFT #21080). Additionally, in January of this year, Soup was also linked to the theft of CryptoPunk #6983.
Remarkably, Soup himself admitted to profiting approximately $1 million from his illicit activities, while his partners are believed to have made even larger gains.
However, ZachXBT highlighted that the victims affected by Soup’s scams had received additional information, potentially leading to legal action against him. The crypto community hopes that justice will prevail, ensuring that individuals accountable for such actions face the consequences of their illicit activities.
