- Elizabeth Warren has denied defaming Changpeng Zhao in an X post.
- Warren had criticized CZ’s pardon by President Donald Trump.
- CZ’s lawyer claims Sen. Warren twisted the facts to defame her client.
US Senator Elizabeth Warren, through her legal representatives, has denied allegations that she defamed Binance founder Changpeng Zhao in a recent post on X, claiming the defamation claim is “Without Merit.”
In the referenced post, Senator Warren criticized the pardon granted to Zhao by President Donald Trump following his conviction for violating the Bank Secrecy Act a few years ago.
Did Elizabeth Warren Get it Wrong?
In a letter addressed to Zhao’s legal representatives, Warren’s counsel claimed no fault in their client’s actions, stating that Warren’s post is true in all respects and therefore cannot be defamatory. According to Warren’s lawyers, “Senator Warren accurately represented publicly available and widely reported facts.”
For context, Senator Warren responded to a report on Trump pardoning Zhao by accusing the Binance founder of financing President Trump’s stablecoin and lobbying for a pardon. According to Warren, Zhao pleaded guilty to a criminal money laundering charge and was sentenced to prison. She described Trump pardoning Zhao as corruption and called on Congress to stop it.
Getting the Facts Right
It is worth noting that Zhao responded to Warren’s post on X by clarifying that no money laundering charge was labeled against him. He accused the Senator of not getting her facts right, addressing her as “The same Senator declared ‘war on crypto’, on public TV, 5 days before my sentencing, during the Biden Admin.”
Meanwhile, Zhao’s lawyer, Teresa Goody Guillen, besides writing to Senator Warren about her client’s defamation, posted on X to clarify the basis of her client’s pardon by President Trump. According to Guillen, Trump rightfully pardoned Zhao for a single charge of failure to have an effective compliance program.
Guillen further noted that Zhao was not charged with fraud and that no victims were involved in the matter. Additionally, the legal counsel stated that her client had no criminal history and was not involved in any form of money laundering.
