Vitalik Buterin Talks Ethereum L2: What Makes It So Transparent?

Vitalik Buterin Reveals Key Insights on Ethereum Layer 2 Flexibility
  • L2s give businesses flexibility in control while keeping rules transparent for users.
  • Ethereum L2s offer closed, open, or hybrid systems based on user freedom and control.
  • Rollups are extensions of Ethereum, with most supporting state changes from the mainnet.

Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s co-founder, talked about transparency and user control on Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) solutions, using the example of Soneium to illustrate his point.

Buterin explained that L2s give businesses the flexibility to decide how much control they want over their operations. They can choose to give users more or less control.

The rules that govern these L2s are transparent and auditable, so businesses can choose how open they want their systems to be. Buterin stated that if rules are chosen for an L2, they are visible to users, and third parties can examine them.

Ethereum L2s: From Closed to Open Systems

Ethereum L2 solutions offer a wide range of system configurations. At one end, businesses can design an L2 with limited user access. A central operator can edit the state root. In this case, users know the limitations and can make informed choices about using the platform.

Buterin emphasized that these platforms must still follow the rules, which are transparent. There is no room for deception.

At the other end of the spectrum, businesses can create fully open systems. Users have more freedom and control over their activities. L2s can also use a hybrid approach. Users can send transactions on the L2, but there might be some friction.

The sequencer may limit transactions but cannot completely block them. Buterin noted that Sony has implemented this. These different levels of openness show how flexible Ethereum’s Layer 2 ecosystem is.

Rollups and Ethereum

The concept of rollups, a key part of the Ethereum Layer 2 network, has caused debate in the community. “@llamaonthebrink” argued that rollups should not be seen as “different countries” from Ethereum. He sees them as extensions of the Ethereum network.

But, not everyone agrees. “@lightcoin” responded by clarifying that L2s are not automatically bound to Ethereum unless programmed to allow such state changes.

@llamaonthebrink countered that rollups that can’t change the state from Ethereum are not “true” rollups. Some rollups are designed without this feature. But, many major rollups support it, which maintains a connection to Ethereum’s mainnet.
