The United Kingdom has reportedly decided to further bolster the nation’s AI regulations amidst increasing issues aroused by Deepfakes. The Labour Party has proposed a policy paper to frame new legislation banning AI tools that create nude images and nonconsensual pornography.
European countries have already discussed and initiated regulatory measures regarding artificial intelligence (AI). In December 2023, Europe marked a historical moment, becoming the world’s first major power to embrace AI regulations. The Council Presidency and the European Parliament together proposed implementing comprehensive rules to oversee AI tools, including ChatGPT.
However, the Labour Party’s recent move was triggered by the tragic incident involving American singer Taylor Swift. In January 2024, Swift became a victim of the AI Deepfake as her explicit photos were uploaded on the internet.
With one of her photos being viewed more than 47 million times, politicians, including U.S. Representative Joe Morelle, reiterated the need for stringent rules against such activities. While Morelle called the spread of the pictures “appalling,” the X platform automatically removed the images, citing, “We’re closely monitoring the situation to ensure that any further violations are immediately addressed, and the content is removed.”
According to the Labour Party’s novel policy, individuals or companies behind creating explicit images using AI’s Deepfake will be punished. The party has decided to consider using nudification tools as a criminal offense.
Under the proposal, the AI tool developers and web hosting companies are urged to ensure the abandonment of harmful Deepfakes. The UK envisions tackling the issues caused by unregulated AI technology with effective regulatory measures.
