  • Alipay denied supporting cryptocurrency trading after Peer announced a yuan-funded USDC trading beta.
  • Alipay said claims that it enables crypto purchases through third-party platforms are unauthorized.
  • Users face potential payment disputes, account restrictions, and counterparty risks when using P2P crypto services.

Alipay said it does not support cryptocurrency trading after the peer-to-peer platform Peer advertised a beta feature that lets users buy and sell USDC with yuan through the Chinese payments app.

In a post on X, Alipay said it offers no virtual currency trading or related services, and called claims that it enables crypto purchases on third-party platforms false and unauthorized. It also told users to protect their funds and accounts.

How the Route Works

Peer announced the Alipay payment option on October 27, allowing users to buy and sell USDC through yuan transfers. According to Peer’s description, sellers lock USDC in an escrow contract, and the tokens are released to the buyer’s wallet after payment verification.

China’s central bank declared all crypto-related transactions illegal financial activity in September 2021, and payment apps such as Alipay and WeChat Pay are expected to watch for such transfers. A yuan payment for USDC can look like an ordinary personal transfer while serving a purpose the provider forbids.

What Users Should Understand

  • A listing is not approval. A platform naming a payment app does not mean that app allows crypto use.
  • Escrow covers one side. The contract holds the seller’s USDC, but no contract can recall yuan sent to a stranger.
  • The risk sits with the user. If an account is frozen or a transfer flagged, the individual bears it, not the platform.
  • Local law applies. In mainland China, crypto trading carries no legal protection, so courts may not help recover losses.

What Users Should Watch For

  • Account freezes: Repeated round-sum transfers to unrelated people can look like crypto activity and lead to restrictions or closure.
  • Tainted funds: Payments from unknown parties could involve fraud or disputed funds, potentially leading to account reviews or investigations.
  • Verification tools: Payment-checking extensions may access your data.
  • Beta status: The route could be suspended without notice.

What Users Should Do

  • Check the payment provider’s terms and confirm whether the proposed transaction is permitted.
  • Understand the local legal and regulatory position before using a crypto trading service.
  • Avoid proceeding on the assumption that a payment method is authorized simply because a crypto platform lists it.
  • Keep transaction records, including payment confirmations, order IDs, and wallet addresses, in case a dispute arises.
  • Do not install third-party verification tools or share account credentials unless their legitimacy and necessity have been independently verified.

Alipay’s response highlights the risks of assuming that a payment option listed on a crypto platform is officially supported by the payment provider. Although Peer’s escrow system is designed to secure the USDC transfer, it does not eliminate payment disputes, account restrictions, or legal risks. Users should verify the provider’s terms and local regulations before using such services.
