Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) has reportedly urged AI companies to give Bitcoin Core developers and other open-source financial infrastructure security teams early access to the latest AI models. They requested this in an open letter dated August 10, stating that cutting-edge AI models can identify vulnerabilities in large code bases and handle complex security tasks quickly.
The institute urged AI companies to give security teams early model access and computing resources as AI-driven attacks on small open-source teams increase. Without early access, independent developers will rely on outdated security software to defend trillion-dollar networks against well-funded, AI-armed adversaries.
Why BPI Wants Early AI Access
From BPI’s perspective, threat actors often gain early access to advanced or leaked models. Therefore, ethically offering the same privilege to developers will give them a head start in finding and patching bugs before hackers can weaponize the same models against the network.
The BPI also believes doing so would protect global capital, considering the amount of decentralized wealth stored in Bitcoin. The institute believes security cannot remain reactive. Hence, developers need to test code against the next generation of AI capabilities before they become widely available to the public.

In the meantime, it is crucial to note that advanced AI could help Bitcoin Core developers identify vulnerabilities and secure open-source codebases by acting as a force multiplier for software engineering.
