- Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana open interest reached $41.6B as crypto prices recovered.
- Ethereum open interest reached $15.5B after a sustained upward trend since August.
- Rising leverage raises liquidation risks if cryptocurrency prices reverse sharply.
Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana recorded about $41.6 billion in combined open interest as crypto prices recovered, according to figures shared by Santiment. The increase marked renewed derivatives exposure across the three assets, with Ethereum showing the largest overall gain since August, while Bitcoin remained below its spring highs.
Bitcoin accounted for $23.4 billion in outstanding derivatives positions, followed by Ethereum at $15.5 billion and Solana at $2.7 billion.
Ethereum Shows Sustained Growth as Solana Fluctuates
Ethereum’s open interest climbed sharply from mid-August into September before retreating and recovering toward the end of the period. Bitcoin’s open interest remained comparatively lower, while Solana’s showed more pronounced fluctuations.

The recovery accompanied Ethereum prices around $2,450–$2,500, while Solana traded near $108. Together, their derivatives positions totaled approximately $18.2 billion, representing about 44% of the combined exposure across the three cryptocurrencies.
Bitcoin Leads Exposure but Remains Below Spring Highs
Bitcoin’s open interest stood at approximately $23.4 billion, accounting for about 56%, with its price near $84,402 on the chart. Although open interest turned higher toward the end of the period, it remained below its spring levels, indicating that the recent recovery had not restored exposure to earlier highs.

Rising Open Interest Leaves Positioning Unclear
Alongside the rebound, Santiment highlighted the risks attached to increasing leverage. A buildup can leave traders exposed to larger liquidation cascades if prices suddenly reverse. The firm saw rising open interest alongside recovering prices as greater participation and a willingness to take risks.
Overall, Bitcoin continues to account for the largest share of derivatives exposure among the three assets, while Ethereum’s recent buildup points to renewed trading activity. However, rising open interest does not reveal whether traders are predominantly bullish or bearish. The next move in prices will help determine whether the increase in exposure supports the recovery or leaves leveraged positions vulnerable to a reversal.
