Cloudflare and OpenAI have launched a research pilot to improve how AI search tools find and deliver information online. Announced on July 8, the project will test whether real-time website data from Cloudflare’s global network can help AI systems discover, crawl, and index web content more quickly and accurately.
The partnership brings together Cloudflare’s internet infrastructure and OpenAI’s AI and search technology. The companies will explore whether signals such as website updates, page changes, and traffic patterns can help AI models access fresher information, leading to faster and more reliable responses for users.
Using Real-Time Web Signals
Cloudflare said its network gives it a broad view of how the internet changes over time. The company said more than 20% of websites operate through its infrastructure, allowing it to detect updates and changes as they happen.
Cloudflare Chief Executive Matthew Prince said sharing those network signals could help make AI search more efficient and improve the quality of answers users receive.
OpenAI will contribute its AI models, search systems, and real-world search queries to the pilot. Nick Ryder, OpenAI’s vice president of research, said access to up-to-date information is essential for producing accurate responses. He added that the partnership will test whether network-level insights can help AI systems discover new content more efficiently.
Partnership Expands Beyond Search
The research pilot builds on an existing partnership between the two companies. In August 2025, Cloudflare became one of the first partners to support OpenAI’s open-weight models through its Workers AI platform.
Cloudflare expanded that relationship in April 2026 with the launch of Agent Cloud, an enterprise platform that uses OpenAI’s GPT-5.4 and Codex models to help businesses deploy AI agents.
OpenAI Codex product lead Rohan Varma said the focus is on building AI agents that are ready for real-world use. Investors welcomed the latest partnership, sending Cloudflare shares up 7% after the announcement.
Why Crypto and Web3 Are Watching
Cloudflare is also extending its portfolio to AI as well. The firm has recently launched its Monetization Gateway, powered by a stablecoin that will allow companies to pay for website, API, dataset, and AI access.
Cloudflare currently offers gateways for Ethereum and IPFS and provides its infrastructural and security services for various cryptocurrency networks. While expanding the portfolio of AI products offered by the company, certain market players expect an increase in demand for decentralized computing networks like Akash, Render, and io.net.
