Israel’s national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has sparked controversy by calling for a beefed up military operation in Lebanon after four Israeli soldiers were killed in clashes in southern Lebanon. In a post on social media, the far-right minister said that Israel should respond with force, saying that “all of Lebanon must burn”, despite international efforts to lower tensions in the region.
The comments came as Israeli airstrikes reportedly killed at least 24 people in southern Lebanon, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency. The attacks targeted several locations in the Nabatieh district and left several people missing.
The increase comes amid continuing fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, even after a US-Iran deal was said to include steps to end hostilities in Lebanon. Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for attacks on Israeli troops, while Israel says military operations are needed to counter security threats along its northern border.
The flare-up of violence has raised concerns about regional stability and the future of efforts to broker cease-fires in the Middle East.
