Vice President JD Vance says that the first round of talks between the United States and Iran in Switzerland was very successful. He thinks it has created a foundation for the two countries to reach a final agreement. Both the United States and Iran are trying to reduce tensions in the region.
After the talks in Bürgenstock Vance said that the people negotiating made a lot of progress. They agreed on how to have technical talks. Vance also said that Iran has agreed to let inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency into the country. This is something that the United States thinks is very important to address concerns about Irans program. However Iran has not said anything about this publicly yet.
The talks were helped by Qatar and Pakistan. They also discussed the Strait of Hormuz making sure the ceasefire in Lebanon is enforced and what to do with Iranian assets that are frozen. Vance said that the talks will continue over the few days and weeks. Technical teams will stay in Switzerland to keep working on the details.
Even though the first round of talks ended on a note there are still many difficult issues that need to be resolved. The United States and Iran still need to talk about Irans program reducing sanctions, regional security and the role of Israel and Hezbollah in all of this. These issues will likely shape the phase of the negotiations, between the United States and Iran.
