Laser Digital Japan has secured registration as a Crypto Asset Exchange Service Provider, opening an institutional chapter. The Nomura-backed firm plans to provide liquidity for Japanese virtual asset providers.

Moreover, it expects to expand into digital asset trading for institutional investors. The company has not announced launch dates.

The approval carries significance because Japan has gone four years without another crypto industry registration. Consequently, Laser Digital enters a market undergoing regulatory changes. Its registration also signals demand for professional counterparties and digital asset infrastructure.

Market Entering Maturity

Japanese institutions are increasingly seeing crypto as a diversification asset for their portfolios. According to a survey conducted by Nomura and Laser Digital in 2026, 65% of respondents agreed. Additionally, nearly 79% planned to invest in crypto assets within three years.

Japan’s parliament recently approved reforms that will reshape the country’s crypto framework. The changes will move oversight toward the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act. They will classify crypto assets as financial products and introduce insider trading rules.

Significantly, reforms could lower taxes on qualifying crypto gains to 20%. The government expects that regime to begin as early as January 2028. However, Laser Digital must maintain compliance and controls.
