In a sharp escalation of US-Iran tensions, President Donald Trump has declared the ceasefire with Iran is “over” after fresh American military strikes. “It’s a waste of time,” Trump said speaking alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the NATO Summit in Ankara, dismissing an interim memorandum of understanding meant to end hostilities.
Trump’s remarks came after a new spate of U.S. strikes on Iranian air defence systems, command-and-control infrastructure, anti-ship missile capabilities and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps assets. The operation was a response to attacks on commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. officials said.
The new strikes raised fears of a wider regional conflict, with reports that Iran carried out retaliatory strikes on US military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait. The failure of the ceasefire framework has also raised concerns over world energy supplies, sending oil prices higher as investors weighed up risks to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump’s announcement virtually kills hopes of any negotiations with Tehran in the near term and represents a major turning point in the US-Iran standoff, adding to the uncertainty that grips the Middle East.
