Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has introduced a long-term proposal that could dramatically reduce the blockchain’s onchain footprint while expanding its capacity. The plan, called Extremely Lean Ethereum, aims to shift most state management responsibilities to validators through recursive zero-knowledge STARK proofs.
Consequently, the network could maintain minimal onchain data, improve scalability, strengthen privacy, and prepare for future cryptographic challenges. The proposal also supports Ethereum’s broader Lean Ethereum roadmap, which seeks to modernize the protocol over the next several years.
Smaller Chain With Greater Validator Capacity
Buterin’s proposal introduces a phased redesign of Ethereum’s Beacon Chain. Initially, validators would replace frequent balance updates with a single daily proof. Consequently, the blockchain would store only a tiny amount of validator information while reducing processing demands.
Moreover, this streamlined structure could support millions of validators without significantly increasing network overhead. The approach also aligns with ongoing efforts to improve Ethereum’s efficiency and decentralization.
Privacy and Long-Term Protocol Evolution
Additionally, the second phase focuses on validator privacy through daily anonymous identities and fresh cryptographic keys. Hence, validator activity would become difficult to trace while preserving network security.
Besides improving privacy, the roadmap also targets quantum-resistant infrastructure and simplified execution. Developers expect research and implementation to continue for several years, while the upcoming Hegota upgrade may mark Ethereum’s final major protocol update before the Lean Ethereum era begins.
