Director Carl Rinsch Sentenced for Defrauding Netflix
  • A US Court has sentenced Carl Rinsch to 2.5 years in prison for defrauding Netflix.
  • Rinsch collected $11M from Netflix for a project but diverted it for personal use.
  • The defendant claimed to be struggling with mental health issues and medication problems.

Judge Jed S. Rakoff of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York sentenced Hollywood writer-director Carl Rinsch to two and a half years in prison on Monday, June 29, 2026. The Judge sentenced Rinsch after convicting him of defrauding Netflix out of $11 million for a sci-fi series that he never finished.

A Case of Diverted Funds

According to reports, Rinsch was convicted in December 2025 of federal wire fraud and other charges, but was sentenced on Monday, June 29, 2026, despite his supporters, including Keanu Reeves, asking the court to show him leniency.

Details of the prosecutors and trial testimony reveal that Rinsch told Netflix he needed $11 million to finish a show called White Horse. After receiving payment, he diverted the funds into a personal account, spending whopping sums on luxury items, including cars, watches, clothes, and household goods. Rinsch was alleged to have spent $638,000 on two mattresses.

Rinsch’s Defense and Apology

In his defense, Rinsch and his lawyers told the court that he acted based on mental health struggles and medication problems. However, they noted that he is currently addressing those issues with a new care provider.

Rinsch apologized for his behavior, saying the process forced him to confront things about his health, judgment, and life. He further acknowledged that it caused him real harm, noting that he did not recognize the danger of his state. Despite their statements, Rinsch and his lawyers did not discuss his psychological troubles in court. They also declined to detail them afterward.

Meanwhile, prosecutors argued for a more severe sentence of five years in prison for Rinsch, who also owes about $11 million in restitution. According to them, he has every possible advantage, including family money, an elite education, famous friends, and a high-flying career. Prosecutor David Markewitz told the court that Rinsch’s motive for the crime was “naked greed.”

More About Rinsch

Rinsch hails from the Los Angeles area and began his acting career by making short films as a teenager. He moved to directing commercials before gaining attention for the 2013 samurai fantasy film 47 Ronin, which stars Keanu Reeves.

In his plea for a lesser sentence for Rinsch, Reeves wrote a letter to the court stating that the former brings exceptional joy and warmth to people around him and creative inspiration to others through his creativity and vision.

Reeves acknowledged not knowing the details of the case, but noted that Rinsch can self-sabotage by amplifying the scale, scope, and landscape of what has been negotiated.
