  • Stewart would henceforth counsel crypto industry players and defend them against regulatory or private actions.
  • Joel Cohen believes the firm would explore Stewart’s capacity based on her former role at the SEC.

Former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) enforcement attorney Ladan Stewart has joined Global law firm White & Case LLP as a partner in New York. In a recent press release, the law firm noted that Stewart’s new role would include counseling crypto industry players and defending them against regulatory or private actions.

Joel M. Cohen, Global Head of White & Case’s Global White Collar Practice, highlighted Stewart as a seasoned SEC enforcement attorney and considered her a significant addition to his firm. According to him, Stewart brings valuable expertise to strategically support the firm’s white-collar, investigations, securities, and financial institution litigation footprint and capabilities in the US.

Cohen believes the firm would explore Stewart’s capacity based on her former role at the SEC, especially with the current dynamics of the crypto regulatory ecosystem. He further said:

“Stewart’s most recent role as the head of the SEC’s specialized crypto and cyber litigation unit is a significant asset given the heightened regulatory scrutiny of the crypto industry in recent years.”

According to Cohen, Stewart is extraordinarily well-positioned to counsel crypto industry players and defend them against regulatory or private actions.

While at the SEC, Stewart served in the Division of Enforcement for over eight years. Among other roles, she most recently served as Assistant Director and Regional Trial Counsel heading the SEC’s crypto and cyber litigation unit. Part of her tasks included building a brand new trial unit and overseeing the agency’s crypto litigation program.

Commenting on Stewart’s appointment, Nicole Erb, White & Case partner, and Regional Section Head believes she will provide superior counsel to clients.  Part of her job role would be to advise clients undergoing SEC examinations or investigations, following her vast experience at the forefront of the SEC’s Division of Enforcement.
