- A European user reported suspected tampering inside a recently purchased Ledger hardware wallet.
- Ledger linked confirmed compromised wallet cases to CryptoBilis, a Southeast Asian reseller.
- Ledger urges affected users to move funds to a new wallet and warns never to share their recovery phrase.
A suspected modified Ledger hardware wallet found in Europe has raised concerns about a possible supply chain security issue that the company has linked to a reseller in Southeast Asia.
An X user named Johannes said he found unusual wiring inside a Ledger device he bought from an official European reseller just weeks ago. He claimed the wiring was not part of genuine Ledger hardware, suggesting the device may have been tampered with before reaching him.
Johannes said the suspected implant appeared to be an older design. Newer versions reportedly hide the components behind the screen, making them harder to detect.
So far, the device has not been used to steal funds. Johannes questioned whether the implant had failed or whether the attackers were waiting for more compromised devices to circulate before acting.
Other users have reported similar suspicions in Asia, South America, and Europe. However, the European case has not been independently confirmed as part of the October 9 incident disclosed by Ledger.
Ledger Links Confirmed Cases to CryptoBilis
Ledger said all confirmed cases linked to the October 9, 2026, crypto theft involved devices sold through CryptoBilis, a reseller in Southeast Asia.
The company said only a limited number of devices were affected and that its systems and direct sales channels were not impacted. Ledger is working with authorities and contacting affected customers.
CryptoBilis has stopped selling hardware wallets. Ledger also advised authorized resellers to buy products only through approved channels and not resell returned devices.
For customers who bought devices from CryptoBilis, Ledger advised them not to set up unused devices. Those who had already set up their wallets should move their funds to a new wallet with a recovery phrase generated on a device purchased directly from Ledger.
Affected customers should also contact official Ledger Support and report the incident to local law enforcement. Ledger warned users against buying from unauthorized sellers because devices could be modified or counterfeit. It also cautioned users about scammers taking advantage of the incident.
Ledger reminded customers that it will never call or send direct messages asking for their 24-word recovery phrase.
Critics Question Ledger’s Response
Meanwhile, X user Ben Yorke criticized Ledger for focusing only on cases linked to CryptoBilis, arguing that the company should also investigate other reports of modified devices.
Yorke questioned whether other sellers could be distributing tampered hardware wallets. He also pointed to reports of scratched device casings as a possible sign of physical changes.
What Ledger Users Should Know
The reports have raised concerns about whether Ledger’s software checks can detect every form of physical tampering. They argued that Ledger’s Genuine Check may not catch all unauthorized hardware changes. This highlights the difference between verifying a device’s digital authenticity and confirming that its physical components have not been altered.
Ledger said it is reviewing reseller security measures, improving hardware protection, and working with security researchers and industry partners to strengthen supply chain security.
The company also asked anyone with relevant information to contact its security team.
