Two students hailing from Abu Dhabi’s Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) have won a prize of $5,000 in DP World’s Big Tech Project event. Along with the prize, the duo also received a paid internship with DP World, a UAE-based logistics company.

Dhanalaxmi Gaddam, an Indian machine learning student, and Abbas Bamidele Abdulsalam, a Nigerian computer vision student, formed the Team Digicortex duo and developed an original two-in-one metaverse-based solution to win the competition.

The MBZUAI published a press release that read:

The pair formed Team Digicortex and created a two-in-one metaverse-based solution to claim the top prize this month. It caps off a big two years for the future innovators who will receive their master’s degrees from MBZUAI on Wednesday.

According to Abdulsalam, the initial concept that they proposed needed to be revised because it was flawed. The metaverse concept was also unrelated to the authors’ thesis research and represented new ground for them.

While technically not the same, Gaddam’s thesis was based on “Attention-based Methods for 3D Object Detection and Classification using Point Clouds,” which equipped her for any challenge.

Gaddam added:

We have been exposed to practical things that we had not experienced before. And working with our mentor from DP World has been invaluable and given us an understanding of process and planning.

The first solution is a virtual training simulator that enables new personnel to become familiar with port equipment almost immediately without having to go to the terminals in person. The second method makes use of Google Glass to give on-the-spot, easily accessible instructions and lessons to improve productivity and upkeep at ports and terminals.

Furthermore, Gaddam mentioned that they had included an augmented reality lens so that employees could use these glasses to readily view maintenance manuals and receive reminders for daily routine checks while on the job.

For the uninitiated, DP World’s Big Tech Project is an international competition that challenges students from prestigious colleges in the United Arab Emirates and India to address global trade issues by utilizing the metaverse.
