Metaplanet transferred about $237 million worth of Bitcoin to Coinbase Prime, raising questions about whether Japan’s Bitcoin treasury firm plans to sell part of its holdings.
The transfer came as Bitcoin traded between about $77,800 and $79,800. Metaplanet has not reported any reduction in its 43,000 BTC holdings, leaving open the possibility that the transaction involved custody management rather than a sale.
Bitcoin Transfer Draws Market Attention
Metaplanet has built its strategy around aggressive Bitcoin accumulation, following a model similar to Strategy’s corporate treasury approach. Its holdings have an average purchase price of about $96,191 per Bitcoin.

With Bitcoin trading below that level, the company faces a substantial unrealized loss on its holdings. However, the Coinbase Prime transfer does not confirm that Metaplanet has sold any Bitcoin.
The company has continued to describe its Bitcoin movements as part of its regular operations rather than confirmed sales. Investors are therefore watching for further disclosures that could clarify the purpose of the transfer.
Metaplanet Eyes Wider Expansion
Metaplanet is also pursuing an initiative involving Super League, also known as Superplanet. The plan could involve the transfer of 2,100 BTC following shareholder decisions expected in the fourth quarter.
The proposal could also give Metaplanet greater access to U.S. capital markets. Investors are now watching the Coinbase Prime transfer closely for signs of a shift in the company’s Bitcoin strategy or a routine custody transaction.
