- Midjourney enters healthcare with a full-body ultrasound imaging system project.
- Butterfly partnership supports scanner rollout through licensed ultrasound chips.
- Company targets 50,000 scanners and one billion monthly scans by 2031.
Midjourney, the artificial intelligence company known for its image-generation platform, has announced plans to enter the healthcare sector with a new medical imaging project centered on a full-body ultrasound system.
The announcement marks a shift for the company as it moves beyond image synthesis and into medical hardware development. Revealed during an event in San Francisco, the project includes a scanning device known as the Midjourney Scanner and a planned wellness facility where the technology is expected to be deployed before the end of 2027.
New Medical Hardware Initiative Unveiled
Chief Executive Officer David Holz introduced the scanner during the company’s presentation, describing it as a full-body ultrasound machine that creates three-dimensional images of the human body. The system relies on ultrasound technology rather than magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and is intended to operate through a process the company refers to as Ultrasonic CT.
According to details shared at the event, users stand on a platform that lowers them into water as they pass through a ring containing thousands of ultrasound transducers. These sensors emit sound waves from multiple angles and record how the waves travel through the body. The collected data is then processed to generate detailed 3D images. Midjourney said the scanning process takes approximately 60 seconds.
Technology Built on Butterfly Network Partnership
The project is supported by a licensing and co-development agreement signed with ultrasound device manufacturer Butterfly Network in November 2025. Under the arrangement, Midjourney obtained a license for Butterfly’s ultrasound-on-chip technology within a specified field of use.
Butterfly’s filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission show that the agreement includes a one-time payment of $15 million and annual licensing fees of $10 million over a five-year period. The deal also includes payments, revenue-sharing arrangements tied to hardware sales, and separate payments for chip purchases.
Plans for Large-Scale Deployment
Midjourney outlined plans to deploy more than 50,000 scanners and conduct up to one billion scans per month by 2031. The company also announced plans to open a facility called the Midjourney Spa in San Francisco’s Union Square district before the end of 2027.
The proposed location is expected to include fitness and wellness amenities, as well as scanning rooms equipped with the ultrasound system. During the launch event, attendees were offered demonstrations that included hand scans.
