OpenAI, the American AI research powerhouse, has unveiled its latest model, OpenAI o1. Internally dubbed the “Strawberry” project, this AI breakthrough is designed to “think” before tackling complex problems. The platform claims the new model employs chain-of-thought reasoning to solve intricate science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) challenges.
OpenAI hails the Strawberry project as a significant advancement in AI capabilities. In an official announcement on Thursday, OpenAI shared that a preview of the o1 model is now available in ChatGPT and through its API, with further updates and enhancements on the horizon.
OpenAI researcher Noam Brown took to X to discuss the new model’s potential, emphasizing its capacity for “truly general reasoning.” He also confirmed the immediate availability of o1-preview and o1-mini to ChatGPT Plus subscribers.

OpenAI asserted that the o1 model surpasses previous models, including GPT-4o, in various ways. It claims the model can handle even PhD-level topics in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, showcasing videos of it solving complex puzzles and equations.
OpenAI o1’s Current Limitations
Despite its high potential, OpenAI acknowledges that the new model has a few limitations. The platform’s focus on STEM has made it less effective in other areas, restricting its scope to just STEM-related reasoning capabilities.
The platform aims to address its limitations and roll out enhancements in future versions. OpenAI plans to enhance future versions by exploring the expansion of the model into diverse areas beyond STEM fields and multiple modalities.
