  • Palantir urges technical expertise over politics in AI infrastructure and governance decisions.
  • Jonathan Lishawa says open weights reduce costs while preserving AI model capability.

Artificial intelligence governance took center stage after Palantir published a nine-point statement arguing that AI sovereignty will determine how institutions protect their long-term decision-making, data, and technical capabilities.

The company outlined its position on issues ranging from data ownership and model weights to technical expertise and procurement decisions, presenting AI sovereignty as a foundation for maintaining institutional control.

Shortly afterward, Palantir executive Jonathan Lishawa expanded on the discussion, stating that advances in open-weight AI models and computing infrastructure have reduced the cost of hosting models without sacrificing capability.

In its published statement, Palantir said sovereignty is the condition that allows institutions to retain control over future decisions. According to the company, surrendering sovereignty transfers decision-making power to outside parties whose interests may not align with those of the institution.

The company also described data retention as a critical institutional asset. It stated that organizations build competitive advantages by collecting and learning from their own data over time. Moving that data elsewhere, according to Palantir, provides external parties with access to historical knowledge while also creating opportunities to develop future insights from the same information.

Palantir further argued that ownership of AI model weights represents ownership of accumulated institutional knowledge. The company said allowing another party to control those weights risks transferring business value and future capabilities outside the organization.

Company Warns Against Political Influence in Technical Decisions

Another section of the statement addressed how technical decisions are made. Palantir said political considerations should not replace technical expertise when institutions evaluate AI infrastructure or sovereignty-related issues.

The company stated that decisions driven by politics or favoritism reward influence rather than technical accuracy. Instead, it said organizations should rely on specialists who work closest to operational challenges and consider the performance records of institutions and individuals with demonstrated success.

Palantir also argued that institutions facing high operational risks cannot afford to make technical choices based on political preferences, adding that consistent records of correct decision-making provide the strongest basis for future judgment.

Jonathan Lishawa Highlights Open Weights

Following the publication of Palantir’s statement, Jonathan Lishawa voiced support for the company’s position.

Lishawa said the expanding compute continuum has made hosting AI models more affordable while narrowing the capability gap between open-weight models and frontier systems.

According to him, open weights are now within a few performance points of leading models across different computing environments, from gateway deployments to systems running on a single graphics processing unit.

He also stated that organizations hosting their own models avoid per-token usage charges, adding that ownership of model weights no longer requires sacrificing AI capability.
