- Perplexity confirms 2028 IPO plan regardless of how Anthropic and OpenAI listings perform.
- Srinivas says SpaceX this week is the leading indicator for the entire AI IPO wave ahead.
- OpenAI and Anthropic both filed confidential S-1s, with Anthropic valued at nearly $1 trillion.
Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas confirmed the company is targeting a 2028 IPO regardless of how the Anthropic and OpenAI listings perform. Srinivas said the timeline has been consistent, and his latest comments suggest it is now more concrete than previously indicated.
“Agnostic of these two companies we were planning for something in 2028 so that still remains the case,” he said.
Why SpaceX Matters to Perplexity
Speaking to CNBC, Srinivas opened up about the importance of the current IPO wave even for a company not participating in it yet.
“I certainly think there will be ripple effects if they don’t go well. The SpaceX IPO this week will definitely be a leading indicator for how Anthropic or OpenAI will go out.”
He added that he expects the listings to succeed because both companies are performing well and deserve their valuations. His reasoning was straightforward. Anthropic and OpenAI are on the frontier of model development, and as long as they continue advancing capabilities every six months, their valuations hold.
“If for six months you don’t see a model capability advance from one of these two companies then it’s a problem for them.”
The IPO Wave Arriving Simultaneously
Three of the most consequential companies are now formally headed toward public markets within months of each other. OpenAI confidentially filed for an IPO on Monday. Anthropic filed its draft S-1 last week at a valuation approaching $1 trillion. SpaceX begins its listing process this week.
OpenAI is also planning its biggest ChatGPT overhaul yet, transforming the product into a superapp ahead of the listing. ChatGPT has already reached one billion users faster than any product in human history.
The Regulatory Backdrop
Trump’s AI executive order takes a deliberately light approach with no heavy regulation, no permission frameworks, and only a voluntary 30-day preview requirement before model releases. Anthropic filed its S-1 immediately after the order was published, a signal that the regulatory environment was the missing piece holding back the decision.
