According to a Reddit thread, Reddit has begun air-dropping collective avatars to their top community builders for free.
Starting today, we will begin air-dropping Collectible Avatars to our top community builders… for free.
Last week, qualifying Redditors were asked to choose avatars from the four collections, namely Aww Friends, Drip Squad, Meme Team, and The Singularity.
The collection is listed on OpenSea, the largest NFT marketplace. At the time of writing, the floor price for one Drip Squad NFT is 0.02, or roughly $34. Meanwhile, the cheapest Meme Team NFT can be bought for about $29.
According to a Reddit blog, all collectible avatars are backed by blockchain technology and all avatars are stored on Polygon, an Ethereum-compatible blockchain.
The blog reads:
“In the future, we see blockchain as one way to bring more empowerment and independence to communities on Reddit. Reddit has always been a model for what decentralization could look like online; our communities are self-built and run, and as part of our mission to better empower our communities, we are exploring tools to help them be even more self-sustaining and self-governed.”
Furthermore, Reddit says that people can purchase collectible avatars on Reddit itself, using local currencies, such as USD and EUR.
All purchased collectibles will be stored on Reddit’s blockchain-powered wallet, Vault. This wallet offers features, such as offering community points, which can be spent on in-app features, and is Ethereum-compatible.
Although these collectibles share the same meaning as NFTs, Reddit does not refer to these avatars as NFTs. However, Reddit stated,
“Blockchain-backed Collectible Avatars are one of the early steps we’re taking to test out the potential benefits of this concept on Reddit.” According to that, Reddit hints that they have long-term plans with the concept.
