Ripple Labs has joined the newly launched x402 Foundation as a Premier Member. Announced by the Linux Foundation, the x402 Foundation will steward the x402 protocol, an open standard for internet native payments over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). The protocol enables transactions using XRP and RLUSD.
Ripple Joins x402 Foundation as Premier Member
On July 14, 2026, in an X post Ripple announced that it is proud to join the x402 Foundation as a Premier Member. “As AI agents begin to take on more of the transaction lifecycle, they’ll need a way to pay that’s as fast and reliable as the way they already exchange data, ” the crypto firm said.
Meanwhile, Ripple has emphasized its existing implementation of x402 support on the XRP Ledger (XRPL), which provides the speed, low costs, and reliability needed for agentic payments. Through x402, developers can build payment capabilities that enable AI agents to transact as seamlessly as they exchange data.
Operational Launch of x402 Foundation
Ripple’s announcement coincided with the Linux Foundation’s operational launch of the x402 Foundation, a new open-governance body established to steward the x402 protocol. The move marks the protocol’s transition to full open governance and advances the open standard for internet native payments over HTTP.
Originally contributed by Coinbase and developed with Cloudflare and Stripe, the x402 protocol is designed to integrate secure payment requests into web interactions. It supports a wide range of payment types, from traditional cards to stablecoins and cryptocurrencies, without vendor lock in.
Reflecting growing industry support, 40 organizations have joined the Foundation since its intent to launch was announced in April. Other Premier Members include Adyen, AWS, American Express, Circle, Cloudflare, Coinbase, Fiserv, Google, Mastercard, Shopify, Solana Foundation, Stellar Development Foundation, Stripe and Visa, among others. General and associate members further broaden the coalition.
What’s Next for Ripple and the x402 Foundation?
With the operational launch of the x402 Foundation and Ripple’s Premier Membership, both entities are positioned to accelerate innovation in the agentic payments sector. The priorities will include technical cooperation, ecosystem growth and a wider adoption of open internet native payments standards. Ripple will contribute to the Foundation’s technical and governance efforts to advance next generation payment infrastructure.
As open standards evolve, expect collaboration on compliance, best practices for security, and integration with new regulations for digital assets and AI. Ripple’s experience in regulated environments positions it well to help ensure x402 remains enterprise-ready. Ripple’s membership also positions the XRPL as a key infrastructure layer in the agentic economy.
In addition, the x402 Foundation’s open and neutral approach minimises fragmentation risks and fosters innovation across the broad coalition. Although still early, the groundwork laid in 2026 could make x402 a foundational layer for web-scale autonomous commerce.
