- Solana Foundation appoints Michael Coates as Chief Information Security Officer.
- He said Solana’s stablecoin volumes and massive transaction activity drove him to join.
- Coates will strengthen Solana’s security and prepare the ecosystem for AI-driven cyber threats.
The Solana Foundation has appointed veteran cybersecurity executive Michael Coates as its new Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), bringing decades of experience in securing some of the world’s largest technology platforms to one of crypto’s fastest-growing blockchain ecosystems.
Coates announced the move in a post on X, calling it a “new chapter” in his career after previously leading security at Mozilla, becoming Twitter’s first CISO, founding cloud security startup Altitude Networks, and later joining CoinList following the startup’s acquisition.
He said his decision to join the Solana Foundation was driven by the network’s rapid growth and expanding role in global financial infrastructure.
Why Coates Chose Solana
According to Coates, Solana has reached a scale that makes security increasingly important. He added that the network processes tens of billions of dollars in stablecoin volume every day and handles more daily transactions than most of the crypto industry combined.
He also pointed to Solana’s growing role in tokenized assets, noting that SpaceX’s tokenized shares launched on Solana on the same day they debuted on Nasdaq.
Coates said these developments position Solana as one of the leading blockchain networks supporting the next generation of financial infrastructure. He also acknowledged that the network faces increasingly sophisticated threats as adoption grows.
Focus on Crypto Security and AI Threats
As CISO, Coates said his priority will be strengthening security across the Solana ecosystem while helping the industry prepare for new cyber threats.
His work will include improving operational security, strengthening application security practices, and addressing security issues unique to cryptocurrencies. He also plans to work with policymakers and standards organizations to help shape cybersecurity regulations for the digital asset industry.
Coates specifically highlighted the growing use of artificial intelligence by attackers. He noted that he testified before the US Congress earlier this year about AI-related security risks and believes AI will play an important role in both cyberattacks and cyber defense.
He said innovation inevitably creates new security challenges, adding that his goal is to help build stronger protections as the Solana ecosystem continues to expand.
