Telegram Revives Gram Name in Proposed Toncoin Rebrand
  • The TON vote would rename Toncoin to Gram, with no token swap or migration required.
  • Around 1.8 million TON, or nearly 80%, backed the rebrand at the cited time.
  • Telegram’s larger role in TON follows claims of 10x speed gains and 6x lower fees.

The TON community has opened a vote to rename Toncoin to Gram, reviving the token name from Telegram’s original white paper. The proposal changes only the name and ticker, with no swap, migration, or holder action required.

According to the community update, 1.8 million TON, or nearly 80% of pledged votes, supported the rebrand at the time cited. The vote comes after Telegram became the network’s main driver and largest validator in May.

Telegram’s Validator Role Drives The Rebrand Push

The proposal frames the rename as part of a broader shift in TON’s leadership and technical direction. Telegram is described as taking a leading role in development, giving the network a faster roadmap and clearer stewardship.

The community update said the chain has become 10 times faster, with sub-second transactions, while fees have fallen by roughly sixfold to nearly zero. Those figures were presented as evidence that the network has changed beyond branding.

Per reports, the vote runs for seven days on TON Vote, one of the largest open DAO platforms on the network. Voting power is based on each voter’s balance at the May 31, 2026, 00:00 UTC snapshot.

Why the “Gram” Name Carries Weight

Gram is not a new name for the project. It was the original currency name used when Telegram raised about $1.7 billion in 2018 to build its blockchain network.

The name later became tied to the SEC’s 2019 lawsuit, which alleged that the token was an unregistered security. As a result, Telegram settled in 2020, returned much of the money, and stepped away from the project. The community later continued the open-source network as The Open Network and renamed the token Toncoin.

Toncoin Rally Fades After Initial Rebrand Boost

Notably, the announcement triggered a sharp market reaction. The TON token rose more than 15% from around $1.95 to above $2.25 in late Monday trading.

By Tuesday morning, the token’s price had pulled back to $2.02. Besides, it remained about 75% below its June 2024 all-time high of $8.24, according to market data.

Overall, if more than 50% of the votes support the change, the platform is expected to update within two weeks of voting closing.
