- Durov’s arrest linked to cybercrime, financial crime, and other serious allegations.
- France denies political motives, upholding the legal framework for freedom of expression.
The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally asked the French government to quickly provide Pavel Durov with all necessary legal services.
The UAE Foreign Ministry issued a statement emphasizing the nation’s commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its citizens. “Protecting citizens, preserving their interests, monitoring their affairs, and offering them comprehensive care are a top priority for the UAE,” the statement said.
The ministry confirmed that it is closely watching Durov’s case and has taken action to make sure he gets the necessary consular assistance.
The Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office states that Durov was arrested due to a judicial investigation that started on July 8, 2024. The investigation centers around 12 alleged criminal offenses, including cybercrime, financial crime, drug trafficking, obstruction of justice, and violations of technological regulations.
French authorities extended Durov’s detention order on Sunday, as the investigation is still ongoing. As of Monday afternoon, no formal charges have been brought against him.
A statement from the Paris Judicial Court detailed the charges, which include providing cryptographic services without proper certification, conspiracy to possess illegal content, and money laundering for the illegal proceeds of a criminal organization.
The Combating Cybercrime Unit of the Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office is leading the court’s investigation, and Durov is expected to remain in custody until August 28.
Responding to Durov’s arrest, French President Emmanuel Macron clarified that the detention was part of an independent legal investigation and was not politically motivated. Macron highlighted France’s commitment to freedom of expression but noted that such freedoms must operate within a legal system to protect citizens’ rights.
At the same time, Russian officials have condemned the arrest, calling it politically motivated and evidence of Western double standards on freedom of speech. Telegram has defended its operations, asserting that it complies with European Union laws and that Durov frequently travels throughout Europe.
