  • Bitcoin dipped to $76,000 amid the $6.3 billion Binance hack, triggering heavy selling.
  • Brent crude surged above $117 as US-Iran tensions disrupt global oil supply.
  • Tech stocks tumbled amid AI spending concerns, while gold and silver continued to decline.

Global financial markets experienced significant volatility on Friday, October 30. Technology stocks fell amid concerns about how much companies are spending on artificial intelligence (AI).

Oil prices rose due to tensions in the Middle East. Bitcoin extended its decline following a historic, multibillion-dollar hack on Binance. Gold and silver prices also continued to fall.

Notably, Bitcoin dropped to around $76,000, while Brent crude oil climbed above $117 per barrel as concerns about global oil supplies increased. These movements show that different factors are affecting various parts of the global financial market.

Wall Street Falls as Investors Worry About AI Spending

US stock markets recorded their biggest daily losses since June on Friday, with technology companies suffering the most.

  • The S&P 500 fell 1.82% to 7,580.07.
  • The Nasdaq dropped 2.86% to 25,437.
  • The Dow Jones fell 1.09% to 51,770.31.
  • The Russell 2000 declined 1.66%.

Investors are becoming concerned that top technology companies are spending huge amounts of money on AI without clear evidence that these investments will generate sufficient returns.

Intel shares fell by about 28.6% after the company issued a weaker-than-expected profit forecast. This marked its worst single-day performance since 1974. Other major technology stocks also declined:

  • Nvidia fell 4.2%.
  • Amazon dropped 1.9%.
  • Alphabet had already fallen 12.6% on Thursday amid concerns about its AI spending and cash flow.

The recent declines suggest that investors are becoming more cautious about buying AI-related stocks. They now want companies to demonstrate that their AI investments can generate profits rather than simply continuing to spend more on the technology.

The decline also affected international markets. South Korea’s Kospi fell 3.5%, Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped 2.1%, and European chipmaker ASML lost about 6%.

Oil Prices Rise Above $117 as Middle East Tensions Grow

Oil prices increased as tensions between the United States and Iran heightened fears of potential disruptions to global oil supplies. Brent crude rose approximately 2.4% to $117.58 per barrel, while US WTI crude climbed 2% to $104.09.

An attack on an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on Friday added to concerns about potential supply disruptions. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes, carrying a significant portion of global oil supplies.

Higher oil prices can also contribute to inflation because fuel is essential for transportation, manufacturing, and electricity production. This makes it more difficult for central banks to reduce interest rates.

Why Are Gold and Silver Prices Falling?

Gold and silver prices also continued to decline, even though investors typically turn to precious metals during periods of global uncertainty.

On Friday:

  • Gold fell by approximately 3% to $3,901.83 per ounce, its lowest level in a year.
  • Silver dropped 5.9% to $49.27.

One reason for the decline is that rising oil prices are increasing inflation concerns. This makes it more difficult for the US Federal Reserve to cut interest rates. When interest rates remain high, gold becomes less attractive because it does not generate interest income like some other investments.

However, US government bond yields also fell on Friday, suggesting that interest rates alone cannot explain why gold and silver prices declined. Some investors may simply be taking profits after previous price increases.

Bitcoin Falls to $76,000 After Major Binance Hack

Bitcoin fell to around $76,300 on Friday, declining 3% before settling around $77,200. The decline came as the market faced pressure from a major $6.3 billion hack involving Binance.

The hack triggered heavy selling, with Bitcoin losing the $80,000 region while liquidations in crypto futures reached $1.57 billion.

Binance said it had begun recovering the affected funds and had set aside more than $6.34 billion of its own funds to cover the incident and related losses.

The broader market downturn also added to the pressure. Technology stocks suffered heavy losses, affecting crypto-related companies.

Coinbase shares fell 10.6%, while Strategy dropped 7.8%, even though both companies reported better-than-expected quarterly results.

Overall, Bitcoin’s decline was driven by two main factors: weakening confidence in global financial markets and growing concerns following the Binance hack.

How Global Markets Are Performing

Not all global markets moved in the same direction on Friday. While many major markets declined, others recorded gains.

MarketFriday’s change
S&P 500-1.82%
Nasdaq Composite-2.86%
Dow Jones-1.09%
Nikkei 225-2.12%
South Korea’s Kospi-3.50%
Hang Seng+1.46%
India’s Nifty 50+0.51%
FTSE 100+0.07%
Germany’s DAX-0.85%

These figures show that investors are not selling everything indiscriminately. Different markets are being influenced by technology stocks, corporate earnings, and regional economic conditions.

Market Outlook

Essentially, several factors are putting pressure on financial markets across Technology stocks, Bitcoin, Gold, silver, and Oil. The biggest concern is that these problems could amplify one another.

If oil prices remain above $100 per barrel, inflation will stay elevated, making it harder for central banks to cut interest rates. Continued losses in technology stocks also further weaken investor confidence.

Developments in the Middle East, upcoming corporate earnings reports, and evidence that AI investments are generating profits will help determine whether the market downturn continues into November.
