Crypto investigator ZachXBT has recovered $275,000 in Bitcoin stolen from an elderly U.S. victim by scammers operating out of an Indian call center. This is part of an ongoing investigation into a global fraud scheme targeting senior citizens.
In April 2024, scammers pretending to be Coinbase support representatives tricked the victim into transferring 15 Bitcoin, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars at the time, to fake accounts. Because of the efforts of investigators like ZachXBT, $275,000 of the stolen funds are being returned to the victim after months of investigation.
ZachXBT shared screenshots showing that the scammers worked from a call center in India and were part of a larger criminal syndicate that has stolen from many people across the globe. They also use a network of centralized exchanges to launder stolen Ethereum and Bitcoin funds by converting them into Tron before moving the assets to over-the-counter (OTC) trading platforms.
The recovery process started after the detailed investigation tracked down the hash of the theft transaction, which allowed them to seize the funds. While this $275K recovery is a significant win, over $5 million worth of cryptocurrency is still missing, having been laundered through complex systems across multiple exchanges.
Crypto Sleuths Build Trust in the Industry
Authorities are still trying to figure out the full extent of this scam so they can retrieve the remaining stolen assets and hold the fraudsters accountable.

That being said, the crypto world relies on decentralization, but this also makes it vulnerable to exploitation. People like ZachXBT help build trust by exposing fraudulent schemes, protecting victims, and making crypto safer for everyone. Their independent and transparent investigations make the crypto space more trustworthy.
This successful recovery gives hope to other victims of cryptocurrency scams, but there’s still a lot to do to disrupt the scammers’ networks. Investigations continue, with authorities determined to track down additional funds and stop future attacks.
