  • Cryptocurrency users need to take the AI vulnerability threat more seriously.
  • AI solutions can compress decades of mathematical solutions into a short window.
  • Crypto users need to adjust their operational models in a calm and deliberate manner.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has highlighted the potential risks that emerging technological innovations could pose to cryptography. Although he did not consider these risks urgent, Buterin believes they should be taken seriously, particularly ML-DSA / FHE / lattices, which comprise core elements of modern, next-generation cryptography designed to keep data secure in the era of quantum computing and advanced cloud processing.

A Non-Urgent But Serious Risk in Crypto

Buterin suggested users take the risks to cryptography from AI-accelerated math seriously, and minimize exposure to both quantum-vulnerable and potentially AI-vulnerable cryptography. He highlighted a couple of AI-related primary threat models and vulnerabilities, including those that can compress decades of human mathematical breakthroughs into an incredibly short window.

The blockchain thought leader compared this threat to the history of RSA encryption, which was attacked using “naive factorization.” Buterin also highlighted a threat that involves the exploitation of “Rich” algebraic structures like ECDSA, which secure Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets.

However, he noted that this is a major part of why Ethereum’s lean roadmap has been going in the “hash-only” direction for the past year. According to him, Ethereum no longer focuses on lattices, ML-DSA, Falcon, lattice-based commitments inside ZK proofs, etc. He stated that signatures in lean Ethereum are all hash-based, using either WOTS or SPHINCS-.

How to Protect Against AI-Vulnerability Threats

Other AI-vulnerability threats highlighted by Buterin include Public Key Exposure and The Panic Migration Trap. He endorsed keeping funds in fresh addresses to protect against public keys that AI models could crack once they are exposed. However, crypto community members scrambling to execute rushed, mass wallet migrations to new cryptographic networks could cause the panic migration trap.

Buterin noted that he has lost more money in botched migrations than all hacks combined. He urged crypto users to prepare for a steady, measured transition rather than a frantic emergency response.

Based on the highlighted threats, crypto users are advised to adopt specific steps to deal with the evolving situation, including moving their funds to fresh wallets after each transaction, not rushing the funds migration process, updating their multi-signature protocol after every transaction, and ensuring that custodial partners of institutional users transition toward hash-based cryptography.
