Anthropic, an artificial intelligence (AI) safety and research company, has announced a collaboration with Amazon to use the latter’s web service (AWS) for future operations. On Monday, September 25, the AI company stated that it will partner with Amazon to accelerate the development of its future foundation models and make them widely available to AWS customers.

According to a press release, Anthropic will use AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips to build, train, and deploy its future foundation models. That would enable the AI company to benefit from the price, performance, scale, and security of AWS. The collaboration will also qualify AWS as Anthropic’s primary cloud provider for mission-critical workloads, including safety, research, and future foundation model development.

The commitment from Amazon includes a $4 billion investment in Anthropic, which would afford the cloud services provider a minority ownership position in the AI company. The partnership would also allow Amazon developers and engineers to build on Anthropic models via Amazon Bedrock and incorporate generative AI capabilities into their work.

Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy, said his organization tremendously respects Anthropic’s team and foundation models. He noted that the collaboration would allow them to improve many customers’ experiences, both in the short and long term.

Dario Amodei, the co-founder and CEO of Anthropic, expressed his excitement over the newly developed partnership. According to him, there has been a significant increase in the organic adoption of Claude by AWS customers since announcing their support for Amazon Bedrock in April. The Anthropic CEO believes that by significantly expanding their partnership, both parties can unlock new possibilities for organizations of all sizes.

Anthropic has been a customer of AWS since 2021. According to the press release, Anthropic’s association with Amazon has significantly impacted the company’s growth. Since 2021, the AI provider has grown into an industry leader, including in advocating for the responsible deployment of generative AI.
