Apple appears to be looking into how stablecoins and blockchain-based payment systems might fit into its payments business, based on a new job posting for a senior Apple Pay strategy role.

That’s led people to wonder if Apple might one day add stablecoin payments or other crypto features to Apple Pay, although the company hasn’t announced anything of the kind yet.

The job posting is for the Apple Pay Financial Product Strategy Lead position, and the role focuses on developing the long-term direction for Apple’s financial products, such as Apple Card and Apple Cash, along with spotting new opportunities for growth, partnerships, and product models.

The particularly interesting part is that among the preferred qualifications is an understanding of stablecoins, tokenized deposits, and blockchain technology.

Additionally, this job posting stands out because the Apple Card and Apple Cash teams already run things like consumer payments, person-to-person transfers, and stored value products. Whoever fills the role would look at possible new products and partnerships and help steer Apple’s financial services strategy.

It’s important to note that the above doesn’t mean Apple is about to launch its own stablecoin or let people pay merchants directly with Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies. Instead, stablecoins might simply be used quietly behind the scenes to help handle payment settlements.

For instance, a future payment may involve stablecoin settlement between financial institutions, while the consumer continues using Apple Pay like they always do.

A Huge Market

Apple says Apple Pay is used in more than 89 markets, while the company has previously noted that its installed base has exceeded two billion active devices.

As such, if a stablecoin payment system were built into that ecosystem, it could give blockchain settlement technology a way into a massive base of consumers.

While Apple has yet to announce any such implementation, the job posting and the company’s potential interest come at a time when other big tech and payments companies, as well as banks, are also looking into stablecoins and blockchain.

For example, the European Central Bank rolled out its Pontes system on September 21, which connects regular central bank payments with blockchain-based markets. This lets participants settle tokenized trades in central bank euros rather than private stablecoins.

As for Apple, the job posting seems to be a strategic exploration rather than a confirmed crypto launch, at least for now.
