BTCPay Server urged users to update its software immediately after confirming attackers are actively exploiting a critical security flaw that could let unauthorized users access Bitcoin payment servers and potentially steal funds.
The open-source Bitcoin payment processor issued the warning on Aug. 7, urging administrators to install version 2.4.2 as soon as possible. The project did not disclose technical details of the vulnerability to avoid helping attackers, but warned, “If you are unable to update right away, turn off your BTCPay Server to prevent unauthorized access until you can update.”
Security Steps After Updating
BTCPay Server also advised administrators to refresh their macaroon credentials, rotate Lightning Network authentication strings and move Bitcoin from existing hot wallets into newly created ones.

The project said those measures would help prevent attackers from maintaining unauthorized access if a server had already been compromised.
Bitcoin Security Risks Increase
The warning comes days after a separate security flaw affecting Coldcard hardware wallets led to more than $116 million in confirmed losses, underscoring growing security concerns across the Bitcoin ecosystem.
BTCPay Server credited the Bitcoin Red Team for responsibly disclosing the vulnerability. The latest incident adds to a series of security breaches that have prompted developers and researchers to strengthen protections for Bitcoin wallets, payment systems and other critical crypto infrastructure.
