  • Brian Armstrong expressed skepticism about the state of today’s scientific research.
  • Armstrong advocates for a shift in the scientific community towards higher-risk, higher-reward breakthroughs.
  • ResearchHub Foundation is a potential solution to align incentives in academia, according to Armstrong.

Brian Armstrong, CEO of crypto exchange Coinbase, shared on X (formerly Twitter) his opinion on today’s science and research work. He stated that much of science is fake, with results that won’t replicate, papers of no consequence, and fake disciplines.

Armstrong believes that the community could benefit from more scientists working on higher-risk, higher-reward breakthroughs. In his opinion, these breakthroughs could translate into real products, which would be the reason to see a real financial upside in those inventions.

Coinbase’s CEO added that it would be great if ResearchHub could help align incentives in this matter. ResearchHub Foundation is a global decentralized community that aims to align incentives in academia. The project’s main goal is to make science more open and collaborative and accelerate scientific research.

Brian Armstrong is ResearchHub’s CEO and founder; he co-created it with Patrick Joyce, who’s now the Chief Operating Officer (COO). Furthermore, Armstrong shared that it would be great to replace today’s false economy in the science of tenure and citations with market-based incentives.

ResearchHub’s users are rewarded with ResearchCoin (RSC) for publishing, reviewing, and collaborating. According to their website, RSC is used to properly recognize and reward users who help create value. Users can benefit from RSC by voting on key decisions and tagging valuable content.

Armstrong stated that basic research has an important place, but the more connected it is to downstream reality, the better. According to him, the real test of whether the research ended up helping people is “whether they are willing to part with their hard-earned cash to get it or something derived from it.”

Armstrong showed dedication to research and science a long time ago. In October 2022, he announced that he would be giving 2% of this holding in Coinbase to fund scientific research. He shared that he is passionate about accelerating science and technology to help solve the biggest challenges in the world.
