Esper served as the U.S. Secretary of Defense from 2019 to 2020, prior to which he held years of experience in various fields in both the private and public sectors. Other national security experts include Stephanie Murphy, Frances Townsend, and David Urban. Murphy, the former U.S. representative, policy expert, and businesswoman, had been serving Florida’s 7ᵗʰ congressional district from 2017 to 2023.

Townsend’s political security career includes her position as the Counterterrorism and Homeland Security Advisor to President George W. Bush and Vice Chair for MacAndrews & Forbes, among others. Meanwhile, Urban possesses over three decades of experience in the military, politics, law, business, and other public service sectors.

The Global Advisory Council was established in May 2023 “to help navigate the complex and evolving landscape of the crypto industry and strengthen relationships with strategic stakeholders around the world.” At the time, Coinbase included former U.S. Senator Patrick Toomey, former Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney, former Congressman Tim Ryan, and Impact Research Polling Founder John Anzalone as the initial members of the council.

Reportedly, the new experts will join the initial members of the team to address the “long-term economic and national security impacts” in addition to the regulatory uncertainties.
