  • CoinEx will shut down after nine years, with new user registrations ending on September 15.
  • The exchange cited weak market activity, lower liquidity, and rising compliance costs behind its decision.
  • Spot trading will end on September 29, while withdrawals remain open until December 22.

CoinEx is preparing to cease its operations after nearly a decade in the crypto market. The crypto exchange has officially announced its closure, with new user registrations to be suspended from Tuesday. As the company noted, the prolonged market slowdown is the main reason for the decision.

Why Is CoinEx Shutting Down?

On September 15, 2026, crypto exchange CoinEx announced the closure of its nine-year operations. The exchange has attributed this move to the long crypto winter that began with the market crash in October 2025.

According to CoinEx, the crypto industry has been struggling over the past few months due to the market slump. The industry has been witnessing lower trading volumes and reduced liquidity. This has made the current market conditions difficult for crypto businesses to sustain.

In addition, regulatory requirements across the globe have become more challenging. The company stated that the rising cost of compliance and growing operational uncertainty have made it increasingly hard to continue its operations. The team added,

“After prudent evaluation, and in light of the prolonged downturn in the cryptocurrency market, the significant contraction in overall industry trading volume and liquidity, and the continuously rising regulatory requirements across major jurisdictions, as well as compliance costs and operational uncertainties that have exceeded reasonable boundaries, CoinEx has decided to cease operations and enter into an orderly cessation process.”

Reportedly, CoinEx will begin its shutdown procedures on September 15, stopping new user registrations, referral rewards, and new orders immediately. Future trading will shift to Reduce-Only Mode. The exchange will also stop all non-spot services and most on-chain deposits on September 22. This will be followed by the closure of spot trading on September 29. However, users will have until December 22 to withdraw their remaining assets, after which the exchange will completely wind up its operations.

Current Exit Follows Regulatory Setbacks

Notably, CoinEx’s current decision to shut down comes on the heels of similar moves in recent years. In 2023, the company exited the US after a settlement with New York Attorney General Letitia James. The platform returned about $1.1 million to the investors and paid more than $600,000 in penalties as part of the agreement.

This means that CoinEx has been facing regulatory setbacks, forcing it to wind up operations in other major markets. As regulators launch new and tougher regulations, operations across major jurisdictions could become more challenging.

The increasing pressure is better understood from similar incidents where several other crypto exchanges have also ended their services. For example, AscendEX stopped its operation on July 1 as it failed to get authorized under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). On September 23, BitMEX announced its closure after 11 years of service. As noted by the exchange, the decision followed a strategic review of its business. Thus, these examples underscore how the current market conditions and changing regulatory environment make it increasingly challenging for exchanges to survive.
