A $6.36 billion Binance security breach has exposed the growing influence of centralized stablecoin issuers in decentralized finance. According to Sentora, coordinated intervention helped contain billions in stolen assets, limiting the fallout compared with previous major exploits. The response also raised fresh questions about decentralization and who controls crypto assets during emergencies.

Stablecoin Issuers Coordinate Emergency Response

Tether led the recovery effort by freezing more than $1.567 billion in USDT linked to the exploit. Additionally, Circle blocked approximately $823 million in USDC within minutes. Ripple and World Liberty Financial also froze millions in RLUSD and USD1.

Consequently, issuers immobilized approximately $2.7 billion across affected wallets. Authorities must now establish legal ownership before issuers burn frozen tokens and reissue replacements.

Bitcoin and Ethereum Remain Outside Issuer Control

However, the attacker retained approximately $3.3 billion in assets without centralized freezing mechanisms. These included 18,270 BTC and more than 420,000 ETH.

Besides, Arbitrum’s Security Council froze approximately $19 million through emergency network controls. This intervention highlighted another layer of centralized protection within blockchain infrastructure.
