Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong expects AI agents to become major users of stablecoins as software increasingly handles payments autonomously. He sees a growing machine economy where digital agents discover services, purchase resources, and settle transactions without human involvement. Consequently, Coinbase has started building payment infrastructure designed specifically for these emerging users.

Coinbase Targets Machine-to-Machine Commerce

Coinbase’s x402 protocol lets AI agents pay directly for APIs, data, software, and other digital services. Additionally, Coinbase for Agents enables agents to trade and complete financial tasks within user-defined spending limits. The company also connects its infrastructure with Amazon Web Services’ Bedrock AgentCore Payments.

This setup allows agents to discover services and make small USDC payments automatically. Moreover, Coinbase Business lets companies accept payments from agents without requiring dedicated agent accounts.

Stablecoins Could Expand Agentic Commerce

Armstrong’s view follows growing attention toward stablecoins as payment tools for AI-driven commerce. He expects more agents to create more transactions as businesses increasingly automate digital purchasing.

Coinbase reported that USDC handled more than 99% of onchain agentic commerce during its second quarter. Meanwhile, Base processed more than 90% of agentic stablecoin transaction volume.
