Coinbase has highlighted its security measures after Binance suffered a reported $6.34 billion cryptocurrency theft on October 29. The incident has raised fresh concerns about exchange security and the risks surrounding centralized crypto platforms.

However, Coinbase says its systems remain unaffected and more than 99% of customer assets stay in offline storage. The exchange also emphasized its safeguards against unauthorized withdrawals and internal security breaches.

Coinbase Strengthens Wallet Security Measures

Coinbase relies on separate hot and cold wallets to protect customer holdings. Hot wallets maintain limited balances for withdrawals and everyday transactions. Meanwhile, cold wallets keep most funds offline, reducing exposure to online attacks.

Additionally, Coinbase divides private keys into multiple pieces during cold-wallet transactions. Its security structure prevents individual employees from independently authorizing sensitive transfers. The exchange also monitors unusual withdrawal activity and imposes strict transfer limits.

Besides, emergency controls allow Coinbase to suspend fund movements when suspicious activity emerges. Hence, compromised systems cannot automatically authorize further transactions.

Customer Funds Remain Fully Backed

Coinbase also stressed that customer assets remain backed 1:1 and separate from company holdings. The exchange says it does not lend customer funds without authorization.

Significantly, Coinbase reported $377 billion in platform assets as of September 30, 2026. It also disclosed $8.6 billion in cash and equivalents. Consequently, the exchange continues investing in security infrastructure as cyber threats evolve, particularly through artificial intelligence.
